...but I do not think I really wish to see ex teachers at the moment. Hi Lowpass. I know how you feel about seeing them, and I have avoided contact with any one of them and will chose to do so on the grounds that my rational may temporarily desert me. Please be assured that if you do contact Tom pr...

Like you Tom, I was saddened by Ex-Pupils post, not only because of the actions he describes, but more importantly that we (and our parents) have done nothing about it up until now. Whilst the methods of the teachers at the boys school come as no surprise, the allegations regarding the girls school ...

Sad, but so true. Lowpass, I hope that 'talking' about these experiences has helped you like it helped me and a number of others. I recognise a strength in your account that seems to have survived - good on ya! Matthew, Tom and Dan have done some outstanding work attempting to get closure on this pa...

I had a one-to-one with him when I was about 11 years old. I can't remember much apart from the fact that he had a glass of red wine in his paw and he asked me loads of questions to which I gave stock answers...along the lines of "what do you want to learn"...."the truth" yada yada!. As far as his s...

let me add some more examples, so those who weren't there can fully appreciate the extent of the abuse. Two whole St James classes were caned because someone spoke on the way to swimming and no-one owned up. When Nicholas Debenham announced he was going to cane "The lot of you", the two boys owned u...

This was a question raised often at the time, and the general consensus was that as far as corporal punishment goes, private schools could do whatever they liked as long a they had the consent of the parents. Having said that, they were never above the law as far as abuse goes - however, that was a ...

You are quite ready to be sceptical of any idea of marriage being based on anything but your idea of love, even while there is no evidence that these articles/documentaries are representative of arranged marriages in general. I know more couples who have had arranged marriages than standard western...

Do you know, Alban, of many women from arranged marriages who have been abused or are unhappy in any way? No, I base my observations on the many articles and documentaries that have been written and shown about it. To rely on personal experience would be folly indeed. And to give you food for thoug...

It's been so long, I don't even remember what we were talking about. . Read the thread if you're not sure! The main item on the thread that caused me to ridicule the whole idea is that of the 5 tenets that were given to the "students" for picking a suitable partner to marry - and guess what - Love ...

Exactly - good answer! The point I was trying to get over to Misty and co (not that she answered the question herself) is that marriage comes from, and is a celebration of, love. Unfortunately it is clear that someone in SES or a teacher in St James (probably both) has sold them the idea of arranged...

I suppose it is all about what you consider important. I personally consider a reasonable understanding of geography as fairly fundamental - that way, if you get to be the President of a large super power, you don't make the mistake of not knowing where the country is that you're bombing! The questi...

I must mention that, in the Boys school at least, the standard of non-classical music was generally much lower than that of classical music, Hmmm.....I wonder why! I am sure I could see the fury in Mr. Debenham's face. Great - would love to have seen it....did his neck go bright red like it always ...
